on Environmental Justice

April 7, 14, & 20, 2022 : Zoom
ARE YOU READY TO CHANGE THE WORLD?
TAKING PLACE
APRIL 7, 14, & 20, 2022

Virtually, on Zoom.

com*mune [verb kuh – myoon] to gather, come together, and talk intimately on a subject of profound interest.

com*mune [noun kom – yoon] a small, shared community that labors toward a common interest.

“commune” grew from conversations between students in the sciences, humanities, and engineering who were exploring the effects of contemporary and historical phenomena on local ecologies. Though engaged in different disciplines, we found that we all had similar questions, valued insights from beyond our usual silos, and desired to collaborate with practitioners, organizations, and communities beyond the academy. We imagine commune as an extension of our early dialogues around environmental justice and invite individuals of various disciplines, perspectives, and experiences to join us.

This virtual gathering will feature a conversation series that highlights multidisciplinary environmentally-focused work—including scholarly works-in-progress and artistic production—from undergraduate, graduate students, post docs, as well as community members. It will conclude with two panel discussions on challenging environmental inequalities and inequities in the Charlottesville-Albemarle County community and greater Virginia. Through these engagements, we desire to foster a diverse and inclusive community dedicated to advancing environmental justice.
